The Children's Museum of Wilmington Celebrates New Mural on May 18th

Wilmington, NC – May 5, 2025 – The Children’s Museum of Wilmington (CMoW) is excited to announce an afternoon of celebration on May 18th from 1pm-2pm for a new mural that has been painted in the Port Wing of the Museum. The Museum carefully reviewed applicants and selected local artist and museum guest, Stephanie Bagwell, to complete her design. Bagwell began her installation process in the middle of April and is set to complete the mural by May 16th. Museum guests have been welcome to interact with Bagwell as she works, allowing for continued community engagement and youth inspiration throughout the project. The mural by Bagwell is replacing a mural painted in 2007 by local artist, Becky Carey.

The Children’s Museum of Wilmington will be celebrating Bagwell’s work on May 18th, from 1pm-2pm. The celebration is open to all members of the community and admission to the Museum will be free throughout the hour. The Museum will be open for regular operations during and after the celebration.

“Watching the mural come to life in real time has been an absolute treat for staff, volunteers and guests”, said Jessie Goodwin, Executive Director. “Stephanie has captivated us with her vision and engaging personality, happily conversing with anyone who asks a question as she adds new colors and elements. Every day has been a day of discovery.”

The Port Wing Mural was made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and Arts North Carolina, and awarded through the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County with matching funds from the Museum. This public art initiative helps enhance the Museum experience for children aged 0-10 and their caregivers while celebrating the creative talent of a local artist. The Museum is excited for littles to see the mural and continue to explore the endless possibilities of creativity and community.
