Nonprofit launches mobile ball hockey program for Cape Fear youth
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A local nonprofit launched an outreach initiative Thursday, Sept. 17, to introduce ball hockey to schools and community groups across the Cape Fear region.
The Wilmington Arena Project said it launched the Mobile Ball Hockey Arena Activation Program to expand youth sports access. The initiative is backed by local organizations and sponsors, including Novant Health, EmergeOrtho and the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina.
“This program is about meeting kids where they are and showing them a sport and a community that believes in them,” said Michael Völlmin, founder of the Wilmington Arena Project.
Initial sessions at the Children’s Museum of Wilmington and the Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington (GLOW Academy) introduced nearly 100 students to the sport, many for the first time.
