Favorite places, community partners, and little adventures to enjoy with your dancer around Wilmington.
Tutu School Wilmington has called Mayfaire home for 4 years now, and one of our favorite things about this location is just how easy it is to turn ballet class into a little more of an outing.
Mayfaire has long been a gathering place for Wilmington families, with shopping, dining, events, and plenty of reasons to stay awhile. And over the years, we’ve loved becoming part of that community ourselves.
You may have spotted a little Tutu School magic around Mayfaire outside of our studio walls—from sponsoring Santa during the holidays to bringing activities and special experiences to VIP events, back-to-school celebrations, and other family events throughout the year.
But Mayfaire is just the beginning. From organizations we’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with to some of our favorite family activities in Wilmington, NC, here are a few places we think Tutu School families should have on their list.
WHILE YOU’RE AT MAYFAIRE…
One of the best things about ballet class at Mayfaire is that there’s plenty to do before or afterward.
Pop into Wrightsville Ave Boutique for stylish finds for moms and littles, grab coffee and a bite at Drift Coffee, or keep the creativity going with a crafty outing at Pinspiration.
Or simply wander around, grab lunch or dinner, do a little shopping, and make ballet class one stop in a whole family outing.
And keep an eye on Mayfaire’s calendar, too. Some of our favorite days are the ones when the whole center comes alive for a special event—and you just might find Tutu School there joining in the fun.
FRIENDS WE LOVE MAKING MAGIC WITH
If there’s one thing we know about little ones, it’s that play is serious business.
That’s one of the reasons we love The Children’s Museum of Wilmington and its commitment to hands-on, play-based learning. Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to bring Tutu School out of the studio and into the museum for special classes and activities, sharing our own mix of movement, music, stories, and imagination with their families.
We’ve also loved being part of special community events like the museum’s Character Walk, where some very familiar fairytale faces come out to play.
Which brings us to another Wilmington friend…
Fairy Tales and Dreams by the Sea has helped us create some truly magical moments at Tutu School Wilmington, bringing beloved characters to our events and making our little dancers’ eyes light up again and again.
But my connection to the woman behind the magic has an especially sweet, full-circle story.
The first time we worked together, she sent me a photo from when she was a child—posing with me while I was performing the role of Coffee in The Nutcracker. She remembered watching me dance onstage, and she’s told me over the years how special it is for her to now be creating magical childhood memories alongside Tutu School.
I don’t think either of us could have imagined that when that photo was taken.
There’s something pretty wonderful about watching childhood magic come full circle like that—and then getting to create a little more of it together for the next generation.
A FEW MORE WILMINGTON ADVENTURES
If you’re looking for things to do with toddlers in Wilmington, Fit For Fun Center is definitely one to know about.
For our tiniest dancers and their grown-ups, Wilmington’s Fit For Fun Center is such a great family resource. Designed especially for young children and their caregivers, it offers opportunities for active, imaginative, and sensory play along with preschool-age programming.
If your household is firmly in its toddler era, this is definitely one to know about.
For a completely different kind of outing, head downtown and take a walk along the Cape Fear River.
The Wilmington Riverwalk is an easy way to get outside together, explore downtown, and let little legs wander for a while. Stop somewhere for lunch, watch the boats, explore the shops nearby, or simply enjoy a change of scenery.
No agenda required—which, sometimes, is exactly the kind of family outing everyone needs.
And, obviously…ice cream.
Because there’s very little we can think of that isn’t improved by a scoop of ice cream, Boombalatti’s Homemade Ice Cream is another Wilmington favorite worth adding to the list.
A sweet treat after ballet class? Absolutely.
A reward after a long afternoon of family adventuring? Also absolutely.
A random Tuesday that just seems like it needs ice cream? We support that, too.
AND THEN THERE’S THE BEACH…
Maybe the best thing about raising little ones in Wilmington is that one of the greatest family adventures of all doesn’t require much planning.
Pack the towels. Bring a change of clothes. And after ballet class, trade those ballet slippers for sandy toes.
Some of my favorite days when I’m in Wilmington are the simplest ones—the ones that end at the beach. Let the kiddos run, splash, dig, collect shells, and use up whatever wiggles ballet class didn’t quite get out.
It doesn’t need to be an elaborate outing to become one of those childhood memories that sticks.
OUR LITTLE PIECE OF WILMINGTON
One of the things we’ve always hoped for Tutu School Wilmington is that ballet becomes part of a childhood filled with imagination, play, stories, friendships, and adventures.
In Wilmington, we’re lucky to be surrounded by so many opportunities for exactly that.
Sometimes that looks like a special event at Mayfaire or a character sweeping through our studio doors. Sometimes it’s an afternoon of imaginative play at the Children’s Museum. And sometimes it’s simply ice cream melting faster than you can eat it or a tutu traded for a swimsuit at the end of the day.
We’re grateful for the Wilmington organizations and businesses that have welcomed us, collaborated with us, and helped us make a little extra magic over the years—and we’re always excited to discover more.
So the next time you’re headed to Tutu School Wilmington, make a little more of the outing.
Come early. Stay awhile. Explore somewhere new.
